Lead Pastor:
Gary and Evelyn Johnson

I met Evelyn, a Memphis gal, while stationed there in the Navy. We were married in 1960. Upon my discharge I became a computer programmer for Holiday Inn Intl in Memphis. Life was good until I got apprehended by a divine call from God. Almost overnight, we uprooted and moved to Springfield, Mo. There I attended A/G Central Bible College. Shortly after graduation, we birthed a church, The Lord’s Chapel, in Murfreesboro, Tn.

In 1973, the year after the devastating flood, we were invited to Rapid City to pastor members of a home Bible Study group that was forming into a church. We arrived with two kids and a U-Haul full of furniture. It seems like we rented every building in Rapid City at one point, from a theater to hotel meeting rooms. In 1998, we stepped out in faith and began building the current Dove church. God graciously supplied for all our needs throughout, and we are now debt-free!

Our wonderful staff are all striving to honor God’s call for The Dove to be a voice to the region. By caring for the flock, baptizing believers in water and the Holy Spirit, healing the sick, and delivering people from emotional and demonic enslavement. Pastor Gareth and wife Marty have become a great addition to me, Evelyn, and the team.

I hope you will consider spending some time with us and see how God is using us in the Black Hills of South Dakota in this strategic time of harvest! Look at these salient words from our Champion, the Lord Jesus Christ: “…I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.” John 9:4-5. NKJV

Blessings! Gary and Evelyn Johnson, Senior Pastor DCC

Pastoral Care:
Gareth and Marty Johnson

An important date in my life was March 6, 1971, when I said to God, “If there is anything you can do with my life, here I am”. My drug addiction was miraculously gone and the Jesus People became my new ‘family’. I left my home state of Washington to attend Bethany Fellowship Missionary Training School in Minneapolis, MN. There I met my wife, Marty and we began our lifetime ministry together in 1973. We have been involved in cross-cultural ministries and foreign missions. We owned and operated a Bible Bookstore in Bemidji, MN which opened up the opportunity for the beginning of 30 plus years of pastoral ministry with WorldWIde Ministries, Free Methodist Church, and Assembly of God. I have had the privilege to be involved in church planting and also in helping to establish and credential pastors and other ministries.
For the past 15 years, we have been foster parents with Abbott House working with the Bridges Therapeutic Foster care program. We have helped in training foster parents and establishing new homes. We also are facilitators with Love and Logic Institute. In 2016 we moved to Rapid City to open the 1st Bridges foster home for boys. We are currently volunteering with Safe Families in Rapid City and Marty and I are enjoying semi-retirement and serving on the pastoral ministry team at Dove Christian Center. On a personal note, we are daily blessed by our four children, their spouses and 10 grandchildren.

What to Expect

During these times of Covid-19, we are aware and prepared for the safety of our congregation. There are sanitizing stations at the front door. We do online streaming of all services, so if you feel like you would rather stay home for health concerns, please join us online! However, we do realize there are folks without a reliable internet connection and want human interaction. We are here for you!

A.C.T.S. 4 Jesus (Accountability, Care, Trust & Service)

Acts 4

The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. 2 They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. 3 They seized Peter and John and, because
it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day. 4 But many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew to about five thousand.

We preach Jesus fearlessly and proclaim His message of eternal life for those who believe. We aren’t disturbed when persecution comes, we expect it and we have faith that God will use it to grow is Kingdom. This has been evident for Dove time and time again. We aren’t going to be a safe church.

5 The next day the rulers, the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. 6 Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander and others of the high priest’s family. 7 They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”

We expect that great works of deliverance, healing and spiritual freedom will accompany our ministry. We expect that it will cause people to question if these works are possible. We will declare that it is Christ’s SUPER, on our NATURAL steps of faith.

8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people! 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. 11 Jesus is “‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’[a] 12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

Above all, we preach Jesus Christ as the source of all that our ministry accomplishes by His death on the cross and resurrection from the grave. Dove is founded on the cornerstone. We want to disciple people to preach Him boldly, to recognize His hand in all that we do and to rely upon Him completely for our provision and sustainment in this world. We do not want to be people that compromise or live in fear.

13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. 14 But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. 15 So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred together. 16 “What are we going to do with these men?” they asked. “Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign, and we cannot deny it. 17 But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name.”

We recognize the value of formal learning but we also affirm that God uses the foolish things of this world to confound the wise. We know that the miraculous should punctuate the life of every believer at strategic times, and we want to help people be open to the supernatural elements of the gospel.

18 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges! 20 As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”

We are compelled to proclaim the gospel, no matter the cost!

21 After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had happened. 22 For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.

There is no law against love. If we love people, by helping them to heal physically & spiritually through the power of the Holy Spirit, we will be highly attractive to those who are seeking to know the TRUTH!

The Believers Pray
23 On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to
God. “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them. 25 You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David: “‘Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?

We believe that stepping out in faith not only grows our faith, but the faith of everyone around us! We continually seek to step forward fearlessly in the Kingdom!

26 The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed one.[b]’[c] 27 Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. 28 They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. 29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. 30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”

We affirm God’s ability to change every person, every situation, and use it for His will, especially if we are open to being used by Him! We seek to train people in the ways that the Lord works through strong biblical teaching as well as personal testimony (Blood of the Lamb, Word of Our Testimony)

31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

We believe the physical realm is altered when the Holy Spirit shows up through believers who are stepping out in faith and acting boldly.

The Believers Share Their Possessions
32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power, the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.

We believe that we need to be radical concerning giving and that the church needs to be a family. Our doors need to be open, we need to eat together, play together, pray together, worship together and ultimately advance the Kingdom of Heaven TOGETHER! We know that many in this world are aching for a family and to have the hole in their hearts filled with saving love of Jesus Christ. We want to be radical about giving up anything that would come between us and God. We believe in excellent, transparent stewardship of all that is given. All for His Kingdom!

36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”), 37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.

We believe leadership must first demonstrate any faith principle that we teach from the pulpit. This has been demonstrated consistently throughout Dove’s history and we don’t plan on stopping now!
